Understanding human directed AI agents

We believe in clear sources, named review, and transparent boundaries. If an agent cannot be trusted with the work, it should not be doing the work autonomously. Human directed AI means the agent prepares the work, but a person makes the decision.

What is the line between legwork and judgement?

Legwork is reading five reports to extract key metrics, checking brand guidelines, or structuring a first draft. Judgement is deciding if that draft strikes the right tone for a sensitive client, or whether a spend anomaly warrants pausing a campaign. Agents are excellent at legwork. People must retain judgement.

Why is human approval not a formality?

When an agent completes its legwork, it must present a review ready output. This output must include its sources, flag any anomalies, and explicitly stop for human approval. The reviewer is not just clicking 'accept' but taking responsibility for the work before it moves forward.

How does the agent learn from corrections?

A human directed workflow can improve when corrections are deliberately captured and incorporated into approved instructions, examples or evaluation criteria. It should not be assumed that an agent learns safely from every interaction or changes its behaviour without review.

What happens when the context changes?

Business rules and compliance standards evolve. Because our agents operate within clear boundaries and transparent sources, updating the context is straightforward. The agent immediately references the new source material, and the human reviewer acts as a safety net during the transition.

The Judgement Boundary Framework

  • Define exactly what the agent is permitted to draft or analyse.
  • Establish what constitutes a 'review ready' state.
  • Name the human role responsible for the final decision.
  • Ensure the human reviewer has the tools to easily correct the output.

Limitations

Human directed AI is inherently slower than fully autonomous systems. It trades absolute speed for accuracy, control, and accountability.
